She swiftly passed directly in front of us about fifteen feet.  We got an excellent clear look at her, as it was broad daylight, and she was only feet away, even if her passage was swift.

She floated through the air, about 2 feet above the ground, and then disappeared into a tree on the other side from the direction she had suddenly emerged from.  Startled, we ran out of there, our hearts racing like rapid Morse code signals.

I do not know why the apparition frightened us, as it did not do anything but appear suddenly, pass in front of us, and disappear into the trees.  Perhaps it was the unexpected appearance, the unknown nature of the apparition, how we were so isolated in that spot, but whatever the reasons, we both felt sudden fear and bolted out.

When we were safe out on the main dirt road, we were able to stop and reflect what had just happened.  It seemed we had jointly seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary!  The apparition hadn't said anything; it only zipped by in front of us, clear and long enough for us to see it, and then vanished.

Amazed, we ran to the camp to tell our troop leaders, and soon encountered three of the adults walking in the main path, to our relief.  But to our surprise, these adults didn't want to hear about it, mad at us for telling them, like they thought we were fibbing, or they simply could not believe such a tale.  This angry attitude caught us both by surprise for we all were Catholics in that group, and the girl and I had both learned previously in school how everyone considered it an exciting event to see Mary's apparition.

But apparently that only applied to sightings in the past, not the here and now where those sorts of things supposedly don't happen anymore. I was stunned by this reaction; I had fully expected that the adults would want us to take them to the clearing to investigate themselves, but no such thing!

I had not been prepared to be shushed and dismissed!!  I was both confused and greatly disappointed with the adults' reactions.  Without them escorting us back, I dared not go back there, neither did my companion.  The adults didn't want to hear anything of it, and that was that, and we all headed back to the camp as if nothing had ever happened.

A few years ago, I started to acquire a good-size collection of Marian apparitions literature, and from reading these various apparitions, I became even further frustrated to discover that many of the significant Marian apparitions started with Mary making initial very brief appearances to the seers, often without speaking a word.

Some of these brief appearances happened repeatedly before Our Lady would speak or do something of significance.  Having learned this, I became even more frustrated with those troop leaders reaction, because it led me to wonder what would have happened had we returned?
